Built as a Norman Fortress, the Castle became the ceremonial Palace of the Prince Bishops of Durham; but since the 1830s it has been the home of University College, the foundation college of the University of Durham. 

Proceeds from the sale of this book go to the University College Durham Trust, to fund projects for the benefit of the undergraduates of the College. The author, Richard Brickstock, is Curator of Durham Castle Museum, and there is a foreword by Bill Bryson, Chancellor of Durham University.
