Professor Taylor has established a fine reputation for his books and articles on the history of police and policing in England. His earlier research monograph Policing the Victorian Town: The Development of the Police in Middlesbrough c.1840–1914 was unique for its serious academic focus on a single northern industrial city when so much previous work, largely by people without any training in the research and writing of history, focussed on London and the Metropolitan Police with the often unstated assumption that everywhere followed the metropolitan model. Professor Taylor’s new book on Huddersfield covers a similar time span, but shifts from the iron and steel production of Middlesbrough to a centre of West Riding textile production.
